Accessibility in 2021 - Honour Project
A downloadable game for Windows
Synopsis:
My project is a game prototype designed with accessibility in mind. Only recently have AAA games started to incorporate substantial accessibility features, and the issue of accessibility has been extremely relevant lately, with many people stuck in a pandemic-induced lockdown. I believe that video games provide a level of escapism and that they can play an essential part in a person’s well-being.
This project aims to raise awareness about accessibility options and how they can help mitigate impairments. The goal is to create an example of an inclusive and accessible game by tackling the four main areas of impairment: cognitive, visual, hearing and motor. I created at least three accessibility options for each of these to mitigate part of the impairments, making the game enjoyable and inclusive to a broader audience. For example, to minimise the cognitive impairment of Dyslexia, I added an option that gives the possibility to change the game's font from “Roboto” to the Dyslexic friendly font ‘OpenDyslexic’.
I believe that everyone should be able to play games.
